What's new in Recap Studio

Every update, newest first. Recap Studio updates itself, or you can download the latest version.

1.2.0 Latest

Keep your face centered

New

  • Keep Face Centered: the camera bubble follows your face as you move, gliding smoothly instead of jumping. Small movements like talking are ignored, and if you step away it eases back to the middle.
  • Works with any camera, in the preview and the export, and you can turn it off at any time.
1.1.1

Fixed

  • Clip lengths on the timeline now round correctly, so a 4-second clip reads "4s" instead of "3s". Clips under a second show tenths.
  • The cursor Size Reset button goes back to the real default of 1.0x.
  • The Recap Studio menu bar stays in place, so ⌘, opens Settings again and the File menu shortcuts always work.
1.1.0

Auto zoom is here

New

  • Auto zoom: new recordings get zooms around your clicks and where the cursor rests. Every zoom stays editable, and one undo removes them all.
  • Countdown before recording: Off, 3, 5 or 10 seconds. Press Esc to cancel.
  • Pulsing REC indicator while recording, and an orange Paused state.
  • I-beam and hand cursors that switch over text and links, for every cursor style.
  • Per-clip microphone mute, with an indicator on the timeline.
  • Export asks where to save, remembers the folder, and remembers your export settings.
  • "Source" MP4 size exports at the recording's own resolution, up to 4096 pixels.
  • GIF loop option, click effect colour, size, opacity and duration, and cursor sway and click bounce.
  • Camera crop with zoom and focus position.

Improved

  • Much faster export: an 18-second video now takes about 8 seconds on an M1, down from about 90.
  • The timeline shows sped-up clips at their exported length.
  • Zooms stay on the right moment when you cut or trim clips.
  • The preview now matches the export for camera, corners, blur, shadows, shortcut labels, ripples and cursor smoothing.
  • Retina displays and areas are captured at full resolution.
  • Export time and size estimates are more accurate, and export shows the time remaining.
  • Only Screen Recording permission is required. Camera, microphone and accessibility are optional.

Fixed

  • Paused footage no longer appears in exports, and the 10-minute export limit is gone.
  • Audio stays in sync across cuts and in vertical videos.
  • Cursor, keyboard and pause timing line up with the video.
  • Recordings stay readable after a crash or if capture stops unexpectedly.
  • Short zooms no longer pop, and a single zoom no longer stretches over the whole video.
  • Recording moved windows and multi-display setups work correctly.
